Why practise phrases before writing?
“One reason is” and “For instance” can both help you continue a text. They make different promises to the reader. The first introduces an explanation; the second should make a point concrete.
A phrase has a job
In the English B1 forum-reply activity, learners sort reason and example expressions before writing those parts of their reply. “Because” and “For example” begin in their groups as examples. The learner sorts the remaining expressions.
The point of the grouping is the connection between the phrase and what follows it. Putting “For instance” in front of another general claim does not automatically produce an example.
Try it with one argument
Take the claim that online classes can reduce travel. “One reason is that students can join from home” explains the benefit. “For instance, a student who lives an hour from campus can attend without that journey” makes the situation specific.
These are invented sentences to show the distinction. In the activity, the learner chooses the reason and invents or selects their own detail. The phrase bank supplies a starting expression, not the completed argument.
Keep the language within reach
After the language activity, the expressions remain in Useful phrases alongside the learner’s growing text. The learner can return to them while composing instead of having to remember a screen that has disappeared.
The final product must use at least two saved expressions appropriately. Appropriateness matters: including a phrase is not enough if the sentence does not do the job that phrase signals.
The task decides which language to practise
A forum reply needs ways to address another person’s position, develop reasons and invite a response. The English B2 reply also practises differences in how tentative or direct an expression sounds.
Those choices explain why PrepTalk does not use one universal phrase list for every activity. The language practice should prepare the learner for something they are about to write. Whether that preparation carries over to later writing is a question for the research.
